Save the date: Friday, March 30, 9 p.m., Mitra Sumara appears at a Persian New Year party at the Clemente Soto Velez arts center, 107 Suffolk St. in the Lower East Side in Manhattan, near Delancy.
As you may know, Mitra Sumara plays Persian pop music of the 1960s and '70s -- the pulsating, keening sound of pre-revolutionary Iran. Mitra Sumara is an eight-piece, psychedelic funk supergroup that's making waves. Big beats, blaring brass, hammer dulcimer and wheezing electric organ. And of course the tragic poetry and inimitable stylings of vocalist and bandleader Yvette Perez. It's hot Farsi funk! Come out and have the best Persian New Year of your life -- Nowruz 1391!
